Give Away--Jinny Beyer's Quilter's Album of Patchwork Patterns

a gift for Christmas! and a give away for you.
It seems that the order was doubled and Amazon told us not to return it so I am going to have a giveaway. It will involve a drawing and I would like to ask that you describe your favorite charity and then make a donation to it for the new year. It does not have to be money. It could be a meal to a less fortunate neighbor or a scarf knitted for the red scarf project, or a quilt donated to a shelter or the Quilts of Valor. Or you could even donate blood. It does not need to be a human charity-it could be for a nature preserve or an animal shelter.
And it will be on the honor system. I do not expect you to report back. I believe you will do the right thing. After all, are we not quilters?
My daughter will pick the winner. It may or may not be a random drawing but I think it may have to be in order to be fair. I will do the drawing on January One. Drawing will be from the comments here and my other blog. (see side bar)

my favorite place to donate quilts to is our local hospital. My teenage DD and I make baby quilts to donate them to the hospitals social worker and she hands them out to the low income families. She has told me many times that this is usually the only new thing the baby leaves the hospital in.
The hospital has special place in our hearts as our oldest DD spent her first 3 months there. Its wonderful to be able to give back. My goal is each is at least one baby quilt a month...we average about 15 a year.

I am donating quilts to Hopes & Dreams Quilt challenge for ALS. This is the disease that my father passed away from 22 years ago. There is not a cure for this dibilitating disease even though it is the most common neurological disorder. Anyone else interested please go to http://quiltersdreambatting.com They are also going to be giving away some donated prices to some of the lucky people who are sending in quilts. This is one of many worthy causes out there.

I love making "Warming Quilts" that we give away for long term sick children at hospitals. And I just blogged about my goals for 2010. To reduce my stash and make more "Warming Quilts". Maybe this book can inspire me to make more blocks I can put in these quilts. Wish you a happy new year.

Thank you for "sharing" your Christmas with us!

I am involved in 'Prayers & Squares" Quilt ministry -www.prayerquilt.org/- that makes quilts for those going through hard times, whether it be illness or just "life circumstances". They are gifts of prayer through a hand-tied quilt.

My charity to donate to is Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foudation, very near and dear to me.

Thanks for the opportunity!

Hugs,

What a nice thing to give... For charity I help make premmie quilts for our regional hospital through our quilt guild. I also am making head gear/wear for cancer patients in our regional cancer centre. Giveing to others is not a "charitable" obligation but a way of life since we all have need at sometimes...

My favourite charity is the Fred Hollows foundation. www.fredhollows.org
The Fred Hollows Foundation is inspired by work of the late Professor Fred Hollows, whose vision was for a world where no one was needlessly blind.
The foundation trains local people in developing nations to diagnose and treat eye disease, in particular to do cataract surgery. The lens factories are all set up locally as well. $25 will restore someones sight. I donate every month that I finish a ufo. A win win situation all round. My stitching saves sight. Bless you Martha for this.

What fun Martha! Thank you for offering the book as a giveaway.

I have 2 favorite charities. One is the local food pantry. As a single mom of four, there were times when I wondered where next week's food was going to come from. I like that the food pantry provides for local families in need.

The other charitable thing I do is quilt related. I get together with several friends and we make simple quilts for people going through chemo, a loss in the family or some other stressful event. We call them "Quilts of Comfort" and try to give them anonymously.

Hello MArtha ,
what a nice start for 2010 with such a great book
The charity I am working for is the neo natalogie unit in the hospital
When a premmie dies the families are left with not much ...and having the preemie quilt we do make for them and can keep home afterwards is special
So please add my name in your drawing ...

Good Morning. My favorite charity is Cancer Research. I have lost too many family members to cancer, and feel they need all the money they can get. I've even swam a mile in Lake Windermere raising money for them this year, and in 2010 will be swimming a mile in a lake in Suffolk, and again in the river Thames.

Wow this would be a very nice way to start the New Year. Thank you for having this give away. My first charity that I am true to is our Woman's battered shelter. I make and give quilts, pillow cases and handmade dolls to the children. They keep me busy and I wish the numbers were not high but they are so I will just keep doing until we don't have any battered woman or children. I wish you and your family a wonderful New Year.

My favorite charity is Opportunity International. They make micro loans to women tostart and maintain businesses to support and educate their families. Pay back rate is 99.7%. Businesses such as banana stands, jewelry making etc. This organization changes the life of women and their families for generations breaking the cycle of poverty. Go to www.opportunityinternational.org

I have personally visited the women in Guadalajara Mexico

I greatly enjoyed participating in the Red Scarf project this year. I will do at least 2 for the upcoming year. Unfortunately, I already have a chemo hat to make for 2010, which I have been knitting for women for several years now. I do not need to be entered in the drawing, just wanted to say what a LOVELY thing it is for you to do.
Happy New Year, Martha.

I do some stuff for charity each year. One of my groups makes quilts for AASK (Arizona Adoption of Special Kids) This group specializes in placing "difficult to place" children in foster homes and for adoption. Some of these are older kids, or sets of siblings. Each child is given a quilt of their own when they are placed. A great group.

What a wonderful idea! I think often at the holidays that it's a great idea to spread joy and cheer into another's heart. My children (all adults now) and I have discussed the possibility (starting next year) of working at a soup kitchen on Thanksgiving next year instead of stuffing ourselves!

My favorite charity is one I ran across quite by accident this year. I'd love to share it with everyone :) It's called Heifer International (www.heifer.org). Their mission statement is to help the greatest number of families move toward self-reliance. Donations are used to provide a family or a community animals... check out their website - I think this is an awesome plan!

I'm so glad Amazon screwed up and sent you and extra book and you thought of this terrific way to find someone to give it to. (I hope it's me - that book was on my Christmas wish list but not under the tree.)

How kind of you to do this, and as you can see from all your comments, quilters are a very giving group. I make small stuffed animals, with friends, that we give to various charities...Guadalupe Center, Childrens Advocacy Center, etc.; I make quilts for our local abused women and children's center. I also donate to a cancer run that a friend recently ran...60 at 60. She ran 60 miles to celebrate her 60th birthday...and was also named Quilter of the Year at our local guild. Thank you for your generosity

I love Jinny's work.
My charitable group is the Whaley Children's House in Flint, MI. My mother was raised in an orphanage, and this organization is close to my heart. Mom would love to know that I am supporting them, which I do every year.

What a great giveaway - great way to pay it forward. I like to donate to the James Stitching Sisters. They make quilts to help keep warm people who are going through cancer treatment.
